  • Soldier punished in beating of Jewish trainee
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - An Army trainee will face nonjudicial punishment rather than criminal charges for beating a Jewish soldier so badly he was treated by a hospital, the military said Friday, in a move that keeps many details of the attack secret. Fort Benning commanders decided not to seek a court-martial in the attack on Pvt. Michael Handman and will resolve it as a personnel matter rather than a crime. "I'm infuriated," Jonathan Handman, the beaten soldier's father, said Friday. "The Army's continuing to do what they tried to do from the beginning, which is just shovel this under the carpet. It should be treated and charged as a hate crime.
  • 2nd suspect arrested in July 31 shooting death
DEL CITY ? Police have arrested a second suspect in a July 31 killing that is linked to a second killing the same day in Oklahoma City. Quashay Waters, 21, is being held in the Oklahoma County jail without bail on a murder complaint, accused in the shooting death of Anthony Parker, 20, Del City police Capt. Jody Suit said. She is accused of being the accomplice of Nicco Barnett, 20. Barnett is in the Oklahoma County jail and has been charged with first-degree murder. Both are accused of robbing Parker and a female companion in front of a house at 4308 Epperly Drive. The female was told to strip naked during the robbery, before Parker was shot in the head. It appears the robbery and shooting may have been gang-related, Suit said
  • Children playing in Ardmore creek find human skull

ARDMORE — Children playing in a neighborhood creek found a human skull Thursday night, presenting state and local investigators with a challenging mystery.

"When I first heard about the skull, I thought it probably had something to do with Halloween -- maybe a prank or something," said Ardmore Police Capt. Ed Hardwood. "But then we heard, no, it's real.

"I started thinking about missing persons. Nothing struck me."

Ardmore detectives scoured the brush of the creek bed Friday morning in search of additional clues. Yet no further evidence has surfaced.

Medical examiners, meanwhile, began studying the skull, and state medical examiner spokeswoman Cherokee Ballard described it as having
